Shell station at Katwijk a/d Rijn - may 1940

At this Shell station between Valkenburg and Katwijk a/d Rijn Dutch and German troops fought an intensive battle.

The Germans had landed at the Valkenburg airfield, but were quickly ran off by Dutch counter assaults. The Germans had tried to control the entire zone between Leiden en the Coast in Katwijk in order to cut off Dutch reinforcements from reaching The Hague. In the end it were the Germans that were forced into the defence. They would hold on by their nails, but yet make it safely out of Valkenburg after the Dutch capitulation. But the Germans at Valkenburg paid a high price.
