Rotterdam bridges - may 1940

The Rotterdam bridges over the Nieuwe Maas.

In the early morning of 10 May, twelve German seaplanes dropped 120 German infantry men at these unguarded bridges. It was the beginning of the five day siege of the bridge and the German occupied Noordereiland [to the left]. The Germans wanted to control these bridges in order to facilitate the 9th Panzer Division an important access to Fortress Holland.
