German troops on the march - may 1940

This German infantry division on a rest stop during its push in the direction of the west of Holland. According to the German soldier who made this picture, his unit was attacked by a Dutch airplane some time later.

The picture is also a clear indication that the fairy tale of the German army being utterly modern and mechanised, although well preserved, cannot be maintained. The average German unit was glad enough to be fully provided with horses and carts. Only the top 10% of the army was well equipped with mechanized units and trucks.
