Picture taken by a German soldier in the city of Valkenburg - may 1940

This unique picture was taken on the 11th of May by a German soldier. It is a picture taken from a position along the Middenweg [around the Marktveld] towards the city-centre in Valkenburg village. The church tower at the Kruisweg is clearly visible.

The house in front clearly suffered from detonating artillery shells from the Dutch 12 cm howitzers and 7-veld fieldguns that pounded the village time and time again. Not only the German 1,000 men occupation of the village suffered from the continuous Dutch artillery shelling; plenty of civilians and Dutch POW's were injured or killed as a result.
