Picture taken by a German soldier during the battle for Valkenburg - may 1940

This picture was taken by a German soldier during (or shortly after) the battle for Valkenburg.

In the picture, to the left, a rare image of a destroyed Ju-52/1M [one engine], which was usually only used in courier and command squadrons. In the centre of the photo a burnt out wreckage of a Ju-52/3M [three engines] of which about 50 had landed on the swampy AFB Valkenburg during the first few hours of the German invasion. Many of these planes were lost due to Dutch artillery fire and a number of bombing raids by the Dutch airforce. The planes that had not been seriously damaged or destroyed by the Dutch were recovered and repaired in the months to come.
