The entrance of the Grebbeberg [taken from the sluice] - may 1940

The building on the right side is the destroyed Hotel de Grebbe. The road leads to Rhenen, over the Grebbeberg. From this picture one could easily receive the perception for the defensive problem Dutch commanders faced pre-war. All these civil buildings prevented the construction of ample defence structures such as trenches and casemates. It is clear that only a system of several casemates would have been sufficient to cover this approach area. These casemates would then have to be built on private property or on this narrow road itself. In the pre-war days and years such sacrifices would not have been made by civilians or by the Government.
