German airbornes of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Airborne Regiment - may 1940

Even during the initial bombardment of Ypenburg AFB, German airbornes of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Airborne Regiment, started landing around the outskirts of the field and quickly endeavoured to mob-up the Dutch resistance around the base. Initially they were quite successful, but soon the tide would turn on them.

This first landed battalion, as well as their comrades of the airlanding troops would pay a devastating price for their courage. More than 200 of the landed Germans would eventually perish, many more suffered wounds, and almost one thousand were taken prisoner. Ypenburg was a nightmare to the German airborne troops.
