Map of the northern part of the Zuid-Willemsvaart - may 1940

Map of the northern part of the Zuid-Willemsvaart, behind which the improvised defence-line was projected. The thick black line between 's Hertogenbosch and east of Eindhoven is the canal. Bearing in mind that the southern part makes a steep curve westwards again, one can easily imagine the triangular shape of the new defence-line. By the way - on the right top corner one can still spot the Peel-Raamline. The distance between the two lines decreased southwards, until they came together in the south. Bearing in mind that the Germans had managed to penetrate in the far north of the line, and the south was still unharmed [Weert], one had an easy reference to the French-Dutch military planning of the Zuid-Willemsvaart line. On paper it made a lot of sense.
