Situation map of the Sloedam and east Walcheren battle zone at the 17th - may 1940

The German artillery positions are indicated as well as their primary moves after successfully crossing the dam. It is obvious that - although many units were a possible threat to the German flanks - a genuine mini-Blitzkrieg was unleashed and proven extremely successful. None of the units in the German flanks was able to even launch the weakest of counter-strikes in the exposed German flanks. The German forces in this area were no more than about 2,000 - 2,500 men. The Allies were far superior in manpower, but obviously that didn't pay off.
