Situation at the 16th at Zuid-Beveland - may 1940
In the morning of the 16th the SS advanced and quickly managed to overrun the French forces along the 'Canal through Zuid-Beveland'.
The two SS battalions next pushed forward in order to outrun the best part of the French and Dutch forces to the one and only land-exit of the Island, the causeway across the Sloe, called the Sloedam. The map clearly indicates the strategic position of the island Tholen, which it lost when the canal-line had fallen.
