Dutch 8-staal [84 mm] guns - may 1940

The SS units that approached along the Tholseinde Dijk were continuously shelled by navy units and twelve Dutch 8-staal [84 mm] guns of III-17RA. During the more than two hour lasting barrage seven out of twelve guns would fall out due to mechanical malfunction. When the retreat of the Zanddijkline was ordered, the remaining guns were all nailed [destroyed by slamming a nail in the fuse-hole] and then abandoned. The German advance along the dike suffered from the barrage from both the navy and the Dutch artillery. The Germans suffered their heaviest losses during this stage of the battle in Zeeland.
